आता भारत माता की जय या विषयावर काहीजण सर्टिफिकेट वाटत आहेत. ये देश नारे पे नही भाईचारे पे चलता है । या गोष्टीचा विसर पडताना दिसत आहे.निवडणूका जवळ आल्या की असे काही विषय काढून या देशाचे वातावरण गढूळ करुन देशभक्त विरुद्ध देशद्रोही अशी लढाई जणूकाही भारतात सुरु झाली आहे असे चित्र निर्माण करायचे.कोणिही उठायच आणि म्हणायच की तिरंगा बदला त्या जागी भगवा झेंडा आणा, कोणी म्हणायच राष्ट्रगीत बंद करा. या अगोदर देखिल घर वापसी,लव जिहाद, गोमांस हे विषय रंगवले गेले आणि राष्ट्रीय-आंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तरावर त्याचे परिणाम भोगावे लागले. असे विषय असताना देखिल बिहारमध्ये व्हायचे तेच झाले आणि भारतीय जनता पार्टीचा पराभव झाला.
या देशामध्ये सर्वसमावेशक मानसिकता असलेले भारतीय अधिक आहेत. हे इथल्या चतुर राजकारण्यांना (सत्ताधा-यांना) समजू नये हे थोड आश्चर्यकारकच आहे. आज राज्यातील निवडणूका आल्या आहेत. आणि देशात परत देशभक्तीचे सर्टिफिकेट वाटण्याची धांदल सुरु आहे. आणि त्यातूनच कहर म्हणजे जे भारत माता की जय म्हणणार नाही त्यांना या देशात राहण्याचा अधिकार नाही असे ठणकावूनच सांगितले जात आहे. मी डॉ. बाबासाहेब आंबेडकरांचे अख्खे संविधान तपासून बघितले. पण, त्यात असे कुठेच आढळले नाही. पण, त्याच संविधानामध्ये आपला तिरंगा कसा असावा, त्याचा आकार-उकार कसा असावा याबद्दल खास टिप्पणी आहे.आपले राष्ट्रगीत कसं असावं, किती वेळात ते म्हटलं जाव ते देखिल संविधानाने ठरविले आहे. मग हे बदलण्याची भाषा करणारे राष्ट्रद्रोही नाहीत का ? अर्थात तेच खरे देशभक्त आहेत, कारण आता सत्ता त्यांची आहे.
भारत माता की जय ला आक्षेप कोणाचा आहे ? पण तुमच्या भारत मातेला मी जय का म्हणावं. तुमची भारत माता ही देवी स्वरुपात आहे.एका हातात त्रिशूळ, एका हातात भगवा आणि सिंहावर आरुढ झालेली देवी.पाश्चिमात्य संस्कृतीमध्ये 1900 च्या दरम्यान असेच चित्र इथल्या जुन्या विचारांच्या संघटनांनी काढले होते.याचेच अनुकरण या चित्रामध्ये मला तरी दिसतेय. देवी म्हटल की सोवळ आलें,पूजा-अर्चा आली, जाती-भेद आलेच.मग तिला कुणी स्पर्श करायचा, कुणी नाही करायचा हा देखिल वाद उभा राहणारच. अर्थात देवी म्हटल की आमच्या सारख्यांच्या मनात मनुवाद्यांचा स्पर्श असलेली ही देवी असणार अशी शंका उपस्थित होणारच. ही भारतमाता सर्व समावेशक कशी होऊ शकते ? ज्या भारत मातेमध्ये अनेक बौद्ध धर्मीय आहेत, अनेक इस्लाम धर्मीय आहेत,अनेक ख्रिश्चन धर्मीय आहेत, जैन धर्मीय आहेत. पण, माझ्या भारत मातेच वर्णन करायच झाल तर ती माझी साक्षात आई आहे. तिच्या डोळ्यात करुणा आहे,माया आहे, प्रेम आहे ती सर्वसमावेश आहे. संत जनाबाईंनी विठूरायाचे जे वर्णन केले आहे. तशीच माझी भारत माता आहे. संत जनाबाई आपल्या अभंगामध्ये म्हणतात… “विठू माझा लेकूरवाळा । संगे गोपाळांचा मेळा” ।। त्याकाळात तिने विठूरायाचे वर्णन केल त्यावेळस जातीव्यवस्था ही घट्ट बसलेली होती. पण, शूद्र, अतिशूद्र असलेल्या काही संतांना विठूने कसं खांद्यावर घेतलय, मांडीवर बसवलयं,हातात घेऊन चाललायं असं वर्णन ती करते. आणि ती विठूरायाला सर्व समावेशक करते. संत जनाबाईंनी केलेल्या विठ्ठलाचे वर्णन हे माझ्यादृष्टीने माझ्या भारत मातेचे वर्णन म्हणजेच माझ्या आईचे वर्णन आहे. इथल्या गरीबातल्या गरीबाला आपली वाटणारी,उपेक्षितांना, सोशीतांना पोसणारी,दुखामध्ये आधार देणारी, आपुलकीने आपलं मानणारी अशी माझी आई होती आणि त्या आईचा जयजयकार कोण म्हणालं करणार नाही. पण तुमच्याच देवीचा जयजयकार झाला पाहीजे अस तुम्हांला का वाटते ? कशाला वाद निर्माण करता. माझ्यासारखे इतर लोकही असाच विचार करु शकतात की, देव आणि देवी आली की कोप आला, त्यांच्या दक्षिणा आल्या. परंतु माझ्या आईला काहीच लागत नाही.माझ्या आईच्या डोळ्यात फक्त करुणा दिसते. आणि तिच्या हातातून सगळ्यांना पोट भरुन अन्न दिले पाहीजे यासाठीच तिचे हात तळपत असतात.अशा या माझ्या आईचा जयजयकार करायला मला का लाज वाटावी, मला लाज वाटणारच नाही. आणि तुमच्याच देवीचा मी जयजयकार करावा असा तुमचा आग्रह असेल तर ते मला मान्य नाही. मलाच नाही तर या देशामधील अनेकांना तो मान्य होणार नाही.
दुसरी गोष्ट अशी की, या देशात न-राहून देण्याचा अधिकार तुम्हांला कोणी दिला आहे. या वादाबरोबरच भारताचा राष्ट्रध्वज असलेला तिरंगा बदलून टाकावा असे म्हणण्याची हिम्मत भैय्याजी जोशी यांनी दाखवली. हा तिरंगा ध्वज नाही तर या देशाचा इतिहास आहे. त्याच्याकडे झेंडा म्हणून बघू नका तर अनेकांचे प्राण गवामून जे स्वातंत्र्य प्राप्त केलयं या स्वातंत्र्याच्या मिनीटा-मिनीटाचा इतिहास हा या झेंड्यावर लिहीलेला आहे. केवळ ब्रिटीशांच्या समोर हा झेंडा नाचवला म्हणून अनेकांनी गोळ्या झेलल्या. हा झेंडा हातात धरुन ब्रिटीशांवर धावून जाणा-यांना प्राण गमवावे लागले असा हा तिरंगा आहे. तो आज भारतामध्ये डौलाना फडकतोय. त्या तिरंग्यामध्ये असलेल्या भगव्या रंगातून त्याग, धैर्य याचा बोध होतो, पांढ-या रंगातून शांती,सत्य, व पावित्र्याचा बोध होतो. हिरवा रंग हा निसर्गाशी आणि भूमीशी असलेले नाते दर्शवतो व निष्ठा व समृद्धीचा बोध होतो. आणि मध्यभागी असलेले अशोकचक्र हे गतिमानता दर्शवते.
भगवा झेंडा आम्हांलाही प्रिय आहे. तो आजही आमच्या प्रत्येक वारक-यांच्या हातात आहे. ज्या संत तुकारामांच्या हातात भगवा झेंडा होता त्या संत तुकारामांनीच इथल्या चातुर्यवर्णाला आव्हान दिल होतं. हा शौर्याचा भगवा झेंडा आहे, त्यातही भर म्हणजे हा सुफी धर्मीयांचा भगवा झेंडा आहे, हा शिवरायांचा भगवा झेंडा आहे. पण,सर्वसमावेश तिरंगा हा या देशाचा इतिहास आहे. अर्थात तुमचा आणि या तिरंग्याचा कधी संबंध आलाच नाही.स्वातंत्र्य मिळून अनेक वर्षे आणि त्या अगोदरची अनेक वर्षे आपल्या कार्यालयावर आपण तिरंगा फडकवलाच नाही. तिरंगा हातातही धरला नाही. त्या तिरंग्याबद्दल तुमच्या मनात आदर असण अशी तुमच्याकडून अपेक्षा करणेच चुकीच आहे. ही अपेक्षा तुम्ही पूर्ण करु शकलात नाही तरी चालेल. पण कमीत कमी इतिहासाला नखे लावण्याच तरी काम करु नका.ज्या इतिहासाच्या कुठल्याही पानावरती तुमच्या नातलगांचा नामोल्लेख नाही.स्वातंत्र्य लढ्यात तुमच योगदान नाही.अशा लोकांनी आता भारतीय स्वातंत्र्य संग्रामाच्या इतिहासाशीच खेळ करावा.हे भारताच दूर्देव आहे. या देशामध्ये भावनिक वाद घालून स्वत:ची राजकीय पोळी भाजणे हे तुमच्या सारख्यांना अनेकवेळा जमले आहे. कधी गंगेचे पाणी, तर कधी राममंदिराचा विषय, तर कधी मंदिर वही बनायेंगे, तर कधी लव जिहाद, एवढच नाही तर काही महिन्यापूर्वी गोमातेवरुन देशभर वातावरण गढूळ झालं होत ती गोमाता आता कुठल्या गोठ्यात आहे हे देखिल शोधून सापडणार नाही. कारण की,आसाम आणि केरळच्या निवडणूकांमध्ये गोवंश हत्येवर बंदी आणू असे आपल्या एकाही नेत्याने भाषणांत सांगितले नाही. म्हणजे महाराष्ट्रात एक आणि आसाममध्ये एक असे का ? हे न-समजण्याइतका भारतीय मूर्ख नाही. आणि प्रत्येक वेळेस हे मान्य नसेल तर देश सोडून जा.हा देश जसा तुमच्या बापाचा आहेच…तसा तो माझ्याही बापाचा आहे हे विसरु नका. या देशावर जेवढा तुमचा अधिकार आहे… तेवढा माझाही अधिकार आहे… आणि तो परमपुज्य डॉ. बाबासाहेब आंबेडकरांच्या घटनेने मला दिला आहे.

टिप : पण एक गोंधळ मात्र आहे.गोळवलकर गुरुजी भक्त म्हणतात, की भारत ही माता आहे. सावरकर इतिहासाचे दाखले देत म्हणतात की भारत ही पितृभूमी आहे. कारण वेदामधून भारत हे नाव पुढे आलं. आता गोळवलकर गुरुजी म्हणतात भारत माता, सावरकर म्हणतात पितृभूमी. उद्या सावरकर भक्तांपैकी एकाने म्हटले पिताश्री भारत की जय. तर त्याला कुठल्या देशात टाकायचे हे एकदा ठरवून घ्या.

आज तारीख १२ जानेवारी … दोन थोर व्यक्तींचा आज जन्मदिवस पहिल्या राजमाता जिजाऊ आणि दुसरे आधुनिक भारताच्या उत्कट मानसिकतेचा उत्कट अविष्कार असणाऱ्या स्वामी विवेकानंदांचा जन्मदिवस या दोन्ही थोर व्यक्तींना माझा अभिवादन.
राजमाता जिजाऊ आणि स्वामी विवेकानंद या दोन्ही व्यक्तींचा जन्म दिवस एकाच दिवशी हा योगायोग म्हणा किंवा आणखी काही १६ व्या शतकातील राजमाता जिजाऊ यांचे विचार आणि १८ व्या शतकातील स्वामी विवेकानंदांचा विचार आणि कार्य यात नक्कीच साधर्म्य दिसत.
राजमाता जिजाऊ यांनी ज्या पद्धतीने शिवाजी महाराजांना घडवला त्यांच्या विचारणा दिशा दिली त्यातून महाराष्ट्रात अठरापगड जातींना एकत्र करून महाराजांनी वैभवशाली साम्राज्य निर्माण केला ..१६ व्या शतकात इथल्या समाज मनातली गुलामगिरीची मानसिकतेच उच्चाटन महाराजांनी केला त्या मागे नक्कीच त्यांच्या आईची प्रेरणा होती हे नक्कीच इथे सांगता येईल.अफजलखानाचा वाढ केल्यावर त्याची समाधी प्रतापगडाच्या पायथ्याशी महाराजांनी बांधली .”खान गेला माणूस गेला त्या सोबत वैर हि संपला” यात जिजाऊ मातेच्या थोर पानाची प्रचीती येते.जात धर्म पंथ असा भेद न महाराजांनी केला न जिजाऊ नि.हे विचार आजही आपल्या देशाला आणि राष्ट्राच्या अखंडतेसाठी प्रेरक असेच आहेत .
स्वामी विवेकानंद यांचा बद्दल बोलायचा झाला तर त्यांच्या भगव्या कपड्यावरून काही धर्मांध संघटना ते आमचे असा धोशा लावतात पण तो दावा किती फोल आहे हेच दिसेल.
विवेकानंदानी म्हटला होता कि “मला माझा भारत घडवायचं त्यासाठी वेदांत मेंदू आणि इस्लामिक शरीर या दोघांची गरज आहे ”.अगदी सध्या सरळ भाषेत त्यांनी धर्मच तत्त्वज्ञान सांगितला .गीता वाचण्यापेक्षा फुटबॉल खेळा..या एका वाक्यातून त्यांच्या आधुनिक आणि पुरोगामी विचाराची महती कळते ..आजचा भारत घडवताना आपल्याला नवीन वेद आणि नवीन धर्म यांची गरज आहे हेच त्यांनी सांगितला होत.त्याचं पुढचे विचार जातिव्यवस्थे बद्दलचे विचार बघा.ज्या लोकांचा ५०० पिढ्यांनी वेद बघितलेले सुद्धा नाहीत त्यांना इथले ब्राम्हण वेद आणि इतर धर्मग्रंथाची भीती दाखवून छळतात ..जातीव्यवस्थेला जबरजस्त धक्का द्यायचं काम सुद्धा त्यांनी केलेला आहे.
आज आपल्याला राजमाता जिजाऊ आणि स्वामी विवेकानंद यांचा विचारांची गरज आहे आणि त्यांचा विचारावरच हा देश आणि हे जग सुंदर आणि समाज हा एकसंध आणि निकोप राहू शकतो …जय हिंद!

After Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, it is now the turn of veteran politician Sushma Swaraj to put her party into a false position. Our External Affairs minister has been on the eye of the storm since she proposed last week that the Bhagwad Gita be declared the national Holy Book! In my opinion, no amount of condemnation is enough for such an insensible, politically immature proposition on the part of a union minister.
Over the past few months PM Modi has been seen presenting Gita to his counterparts abroad. Well, it has been entirely a matter of personal choice that he could not find anything more appropriate to share with the heads of the states. But it is plain weird to capitalize in the gesture and make demands that the Hindu holy book be proclaimed as India’s national scripture.
Not only in India, Bhagwad Gita is universally revered all over the world. For ages, both the mass and class in India have drawn inspiration from the message of Gita in their spiritual and mundane discourses. It is absolutely unnecessary to confer an official designation to this universally-admired book as if in an attempt to elevate its prestige. Thus any attempt at constricting the vastness of Gita into the narrow confinement of national symbol was bound to evoke suspicion and treated as nothing but cheap political gimmick. It is hardly surprising that the External Affairs minister’s statement has irked the entire nation, not just the parties in opposition.
BJP has taken a childish stand by insisting that Gita is not a Dharmagranth (religious scripture) but a karma granth (book that strives to guide one’s actions). Holy books of every religion do just that—they preaches the ideal way of leading life for the highest spiritual attainment in lifetime and beyond. Then why impose the holy book of Hindus on the people belonging to other religions? It is clearly against India’s secular spirit. As I told earlier to the press, the Union Minister’s statement is coated with religiously provocative fervor that is hurting the sentiments of the people of other faiths.
Lastly and most importantly, India already has its national book – the Constitution and no holy book – Gita, Quran, Bible or any other can replace it. It is sad that a veteran politician like Ms Swaraj has missed the point. Bhagwad Gita can provide us with the blueprint for a fulfilling life and spiritual experience on a personal plane. But when it comes to the interest of a multi-cultural, multi-lingual, multi-religion nation like India, the Indian Constitution is the ultimate holy book.
And since when has the creation of a national symbol started to fall under the purview of the Ministry of External Affairs? As an ardent follower of the Gita, she should not have forgotten one of the Gita’s fundamental teachings that one’s Dharma or duty involves discharging the divine-ordained responsibilities in the most impeccable manner. In charge of one of the most important offices, Ms Swaraj is thus expected to refrain from meddling in other’s duties and focus more on those of her own.

In view of the current frozen-baba fiasco, the gullibility of Indian mass has once again come to the fore. The episode underscores Indian people’s everlasting romance with superfluous spirituality and a lethargic administration’s pathetic failure in taking a firm standing.
Indian newspapers have always dedicated a good amount of news prints for the so called Spiritual gurus. In the recent months, some of them have even made to the international media as well. But this frozen baba controversy seems to overshadow all the previous guru-incidents in terms of drama. In fact it packs so much punch that it can well be the inspiration for the next Bollywood blockbuster or a 12-year long soap opera.
In a true it-happens-only-in-India kind of melodrama, the dead body of this self-styled godman, Asutosh Maharaj has been kept in frozen state for as long as 11 months. When he founded this Jalandhar-based Divya Jyoti Jagriti Sansthan (DJJS) sect or when he was slowly spinning out this multi-million dollar empire over his decades-long religious career, little did he imagine that one day his mortal remains would be held hostage in the safe confine of a deep freezer inside his own ashram by a regiment of his own disciples! The guru was declared “clinically dead” by the doctors back in January. In a bold defiance of the law and tradition, the ashram inmates have simply refused to part with their guru’s body. A theory of imminent resurrection was upheld to avoid cremation.
The controversy further escalated with the surfacing of a son, hinting at a bigger conspiracy masterminded by the people with top-level connections. A former aide and driver of Asutosh Maharaj also alleged murder. Given that the property value of the godman running in crores, the conspiracy claims hardly surprise anybody.
Just think about it! A dead body is kept in a frozen state for past eleven months, speculations are brewing, the ashram is under media scanner for months, ashram inmates are openly fortifying the ashram in anticipation of a possible clash with the administration. The government officials are barred from entering the ashram premises. And even then, the government continues to provide expensive security cover to the Nurmahal Ashram, where the dead body is kept.
Well, I am not here to narrate a whodunit story or find out who is telling the truth. The question that seems to baffle every sane Indian is: how and why could the government drag the episode thus far? The incident has exposed the state’s callousness in dealing with the issues having roots in religious organizations and the men behind them. With the sensational Rampal incident, the entire nation has come to know about the existence of the parallel power centers called “deras” across Punjab and Haryana. Again, most of these organizations enjoy Z or Z Plus level of security.
Given the current stalemate, there is no denying of the fact that the ruling SAD-BJP alliance has become a mere pawn at the hands of a few spiritual gurus that command enormous influence over a commendable section of the population. In frozen baba controversy, it ultimately amounts to the vote bank consisting of hundreds and thousands of followers, a majority of whom belong to Dalits and other similar castes.
Under this circumstance, the Punjab Government acted quite predictably. Fearing the loss of Dalit votes, the government chose not to take any action and allowed the impasse to continue.
Punjab Government has reportedly wasted crores of taxpayers’ money in providing Z Plus security cover to the frozen deadbody at Nurmahal. No spokesperson from SAD (Badal) or BJP has offered any explanation. As the HC deadline for cremation nears, the nation is waiting with batted breath to see what happens next? Is a Rampal-like incidence imminent? Is yet another multi-crores encounter on the card?
In a digital India, there are only few buyers of the story of a dead man coming back. Still, such bizarre practices take place only because of the strong political backing. Government should be more respectful of the principle of separation of religion and politics. Mission to Mars represents a developing nation’s unbridled aspirations. An attempt at breaking the notorious nexus between electoral politics and religion can go a long way to reinforce India’s brand image among the international communities.

Sometimes I really wonder whether we are progressive thinkers.
Take the recent example of the district of Bastar in Chhattisgarh. The Catholic missionaries were put under intense pressure by the Hindu right-wing organisation, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), to implement a number of changes in the schools run by the Christian diocese. As per the demands of VHP, the missionaries were forced to agree that instead of the word “Father”, students will now on use the word “Pracharya”, or “Up-pracharya”, or “Sir” to address school principal.
Their demands do not end here. They insist on photographs of “Maa Saraswati” and “great personalities who have worked for national interest” to be put up in classrooms. They have also objected to the Santa Claus distributing chocolates amongst school children.
I strongly condemn imposition of such irrational demands that could potentially polarise people on religious lines. What is the problem in the term ‘Father’? If the religious order has conferred the title of “Father” by virtue of him being a priest, why should anyone else have an objection? Why interfere in a tradition, a practice that is being unquestionably globally followed for ages? If the religious community refers to the title as ‘Father’, why deny them the right?
“Addressing a teacher as father puts emotional pressure on students and their parents”, is the lame justification they give. I have myself studied in a convent school. And Father is what we called our principal. It never ever put any emotional pressure on us!
Back in the 19th century, the educational system that prevailed in India was not organised and did not cater to the needs of all sections of the society. One must not forget the contribution of Christian missionaries in spreading education throughout the country.
Secularism, in its true sense respects individuals’ choice of religion and religious practices. It does not believe in imposing or claiming superiority of one’s thoughts over the other.
We’d all remember the gruesome burning alive of Dr. Graham Staines and his 2 sons aged 10 and 6 years, by another Hindu right wing organisation, Bajrang Dal’s activist in Odhisha. The allegation that Staines had forcibly converted or lured many Hindus into Christianity, completely took away from Staines the years of service that he put in for tribal poor and lepers. The Staines’ murder will remain a collective blot on the conscience of India for a long time to come.
Having said this, I do not endorse insidious practices of conversion followed by any religion. My stand in this article is my condemnation of imposition of any religious ideology for personal or political agenda. This not only damages public sentiments but also creates unhealthy division in a society where harmony is the need of the hour.
Earlier this year, Dinanath Batra, a veteran of the BJP’s ideological mentor Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), came in the limelight for his campaign to ban American author Wendi Doniger’s book “The Hindus”.
HRD ministry has been in the news for wrong reasons and their governance in food habits of students is taking it too far, by IIT taking off non-vegetarian food from the menu in all the hostels. HRD Ministry’s latest salvo about replacing German language with Sanskrit as third language in over 500 Kendriya Vidyalayas also smacks of fundamentalist approach. A far-sighted approach would have been letting students choose between German and Sanskrit, rather than imposing and that too mid-semester, without any forethought on consequences and students’ challenges.
While on one hand we are making progress in science & technology, its ironical that some fundamentalist Hindu right wing organizations under the tutelage of BJP are raising their ugly heads to promote their regressive thinking.
What Bastar needs is a revival of traditional art and handicrafts, which can help them reach markets and gain back glory. It needs to be place of safer travel. Poverty and naxalism are bigger areas of concern. It is sad that the more relevant social issues on hand are neglected and importance is given to trivial issues like calling a school principal a ‘Father’.

Yesterday I posted that I support the “Kiss of Love” movement. I felt that an elaboration on my thought process and my stand was in order. And hence this note.
THE CONTEXT
Let me start from the very beginning. Some days ago, Yuva Morcha, the youth wing of the right wing Bharatiya Janata Party attacked a restaurant in Kerala where supposedly youngsters were practising ‘western culture’. This sparked a campaign a debate on moral policing in the country and a campaign “Kiss of love” went viral. Some students from IIT Bombay decided to stand in solidarity with the comrades in Kochi, wrote slogans like “Love is not a crime, Moral policing is!”, “Moral Fascism, Food Fascism, DOWN DOWN”, sang songs of friendship and protest like “Yaroon Dosti” and “We shall overcome”. Likewise, students and youth across cities like Hyderabad, Kolkata, Delhi and other cities held protests against any kind of fascism, exploitation, discrimination and oppression. Before the debate in mind takes off, let us analyse the situation at each step and ask hard questions at each level.
THE TRIGGER
The act of PDA(public display of affection). PDA, as such, is quite accepted in a few western nations. The demographics of these countries comprise of educated and urban population and an indigenous cultural framework. Research shows that religiosity and culture are important factors that determine the level of expression of affection in general. India, as such, is an ingenuously diverse country, culturally and naturally. Languages, religions, dance, music, architecture, food, customs differ from place to place within India and it’s truly an amalgamation of several cultures. With such a cultural backdrop, what is right for one could be wrong to another. Acceptance or non-acceptance of an act of PDA, really depends on the context and the perspective of the observer. For example, owing to its cultural framework, a western nation would allow such an act without causing any disturbance and resentment in fellow citizens.
MORAL POLICING
The bigger debate really is “Who has the right to decide how to behave or how not to behave?” Doesn’t everyone have his/her own right to do what they want until his/her activities don’t affect others? How does a group of individuals have the right to attack in the name of culture? Who are these moral police? How can political ideologies be thrust upon people? What is the definition of ‘obscene’? We are in a free country where freedom of expression, is a fundamental right. The “Kiss of love” as such is a movement that actually symbolizes liberty and freedom of expression. The participants of the movement are trying to move against culture of hate and intolerance. Tentacles of moral police are spreading fast and infringing on freedom of expression. Judgements are being passed. ‘Rules of decorum’ are being dictated. The protest is against these. Youngsters are asking questions relevant questions “When urinating public places are not stopped, why is a girl stopped from holding a boy’s hand?”, “Why am I not allowed to wear certain types of clothes under the pretext of ‘threat’?” Aren’t these questions justified?
INDIAN YOUTH
Indian society, as such, has always been open and liberal. We are the world’s largest democracy and one of the world’s youngest and are in the midst of a culture shift like we’ve never seen before. The youth of India today is more aggressive and clearer in their minds. They dare to think different and operate with a can-do attitude and confidence. The youth of India know exactly what they want out of life. They have easier access to information. They are NOT AFRAID of supporting causes and movements, and even unknown people, if they believe in the cause. ‘Culture’ to youngsters probably even has a different meaning.
The need of the hour is to create awareness, to guide not to DICTATE. Being open and liberal is one thing, and being impudent and unabashed is another. Am sure youth is smart enough to differentiate between the two and draw the line themselves. Let us have more faith in our younger generation, and as young blood, if we think they need direction and they are being swayed in a particular direction, let us guide them, rather than dictate to them. Our youth, in the form of this movement, is clearly sending out a message that their freedom needs to be respected. Can we grant them this-their fundamental right of expression. Is this big enough an issue to cause such a disruption and unrest in society today? Aren’t there bigger social issues to be addressed?
